The Cannabis and Tobacco (CaT) Research Lab of San Diego is led by Dr. Kim Pulvers, a mentor with a substantial track record of engaging students in impactful research and providing advanced training which facilitates admission to prestigious graduate programs and career pursuits. Trainees have received many awards and fellowships ranging from Dean’s Awards to placements with the National Institutes of Health.
The CaT Lab is composed of graduate and undergraduate students, and post baccalaureate trainees. We are a collaborative team and use a peer-mentoring model under the guidance of Dr. Pulvers, which provides valuable leadership opportunities to students. This lab is active in providing opportunities for students to develop and test research questions for presentation at scientific or local conferences and co-author publications. The CaT Lab is always interested in students who are hard working, methodical, dependable, and possess strong communication skills. Minimum requirements include: the ability to commit at least 10 hours per week and a minimum of two semesters, and completion of Research Methods. Preferred requirements include: relevant work or research experience, strong classroom performance, and the ability to commit more than ten hours per week and more than two semesters.
Dr. Pulvers considers graduate students who are interested in tobacco and cannabis use and smoke and vape free initiatives. Areas of interest can include addressing health disparities and identifying modifiable psychological, social, and behavioral factors linked with substance use.
She seeks candidates with the research experience and aptitude to independently manage new projects and lead the team of undergraduate students in data collection and abstract development. Additionally, Dr. Pulvers considers fit with her research interests and current projects, and the candidate's interpersonal style, career/educational objective, and ability to make graduate school a full-time commitment.
